Almost coming up on 2 years since I wrote this post, and it's incredible to see how things have changed. FB, now on the border of 500 million users and a skyrocketing valuation figure, to advertise in Facebook was never in the business plan. For some campaigns we now spend 4x more on FB than Google.

Recently stopped by the Facebook booth at Ad Tech San Francisco just a few weeks ago, and their slogan: "Find Your Customers Before They Search." My post above doesn't send that type of message; will the self-absorbed FB user actually click an advertisement? YES, they do. And in fact, the ads are limited to 3 ads (with an image!) but typically there are 2.

Not only do they click the ad, but they also convert to emails and new business for our clients. If Zuckerberg would pucker up, I'd give him a big fat kiss!

Here is a fantastic WSJ article that shows how, historically, the West has often approached the Chinese in an effort to push ideals down the throat of the Chinese people. Highly recommended reading, particularly paragraphs 7,8 & 9.

I happen to know a thing or two about identity fraud. My wifes identity was stolen in the past year and she was issued 10's of fraudulent credit cards, new bank accounts, new cars, she even went to the hospital apparently. Well the crook did at least. The thief also deemed it easy enough to walk into the dmv and get an official drivers license complete with her picture and my wifes information. You would think the DMV is secure, it's not, you would think Wells Fargo is secure, it's not. Like Scott points out there are lots of holes in the systems and we should all be held accountable.

If your building a website you should definitely take into consideration situations like mine and make sure your server is PCI compliant. As far as I understand that's the most common guidelines for creating secure transactions. Important to note, compliance takes time to bring to life so hiring a person like Scott is worth the money.

The one thing that bugs me a bit is that gmail seems to read/scan my mail and target ads that fall in line with my email subjects. I'm looking at one of my emails about BMW leather and at the top I have a banner ad for BMW of San Diego. then I switch to an email about tennis strings and there is a banner ad for String Depot Plus. Is this a more sophisticated cookie application that they are using or is this something else going on? It just seems wrong that they do this and it is blatantly obvious.
