Blogging is no easy task. Trying to come up with an original(ish) idea, taking the time to write it, post it and hopefully get some reader participation puts pressure on the writer and the writer’s content. If you have ever felt like this when writing your own blog, then this is a short read for you.
Only 1 in 10 content ideas — or even just 1 in 15 — will be, like, epic! These well-structured content ideas are where your insight is valuable. Be proud of what you created, because let’s face it: good, insightful content is hard to create.
Do What Comedians Do
The same can be said for comedians. Their content is what makes their routine great.
It’s called a “routine” for a reason — because it happens more than once. Great comedians, like George Carlin, recycle their content. They leave a small variable that can be tweaked to fit the city where they are performing or the TV show on which they’re appearing. You’v
e seen it done. Others update their jokes with more contemporary material to keep it fresh.
George Carlin was often described as having two key focuses. One was on the “little world,” which was mostly observational comedy. The other was “big world” social commentary collected from a wide range of topics he was passionate about. Blogging and comedy have a few similarities, at least to me.
Each blog post doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel.
Here are some topics to consider that can be adjusted and re-used when it’s time to put something great on your firm’s blog.
- Anything about safety. And do it as a “Top 5.”
Dangerous intersections. Safest cars. Unsafest cars. Friendliest school crossing guards. Worst-lit gas stations. Most dangerous public ATMs. Dog breeds that bite children most frequently. The list of topics is endless. - Passionate topics.
Do you fear the death of the civil trial jury system? Despise children’s toys made in China? Pick your passion and write about it. - Give stuff to kids.
You could spends thousands on fancy PR — or you could just give stuff to kids. Everyone loves kids. Kids needs school supplies, guitar lessons, soccer shin guards, helmets and sometimes just a Big Brother. Get some decent photos of you in action and make sure it is shared. You’ll feel good while doing good. You’re not the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, but you will be doing more than a lot of others.
Numbers 1 & 3 are Carlin’s “little world” topics that address things on the community level. They can be combined with #2 to create content that lasts longer and develops even more reason to be re-used.
