5 Tips to ‘Spring Clean’ Your Website


Spring has finally sprung!

When thinking about “spring cleaning,” what first comes to mind? Maybe you think about sprucing up your home, your car, or getting rid of old junk and stuff you don’t use anymore. Better still, now is also the perfect time to add another thing to that list you’ve been putting off all winter: updating your website.

  1. First Impressions Matter

Go to your website’s homepage. What do you see? More importantly, what do your visitors see?

How does the page look? Is your content readable and error-free? Is the layout user-friendly and engaging? Depending on when you last did it, you may need to touch up the graphics or update the design (more on this later). Even something as simple as adding a different color or new image to the site can give it a whole new look with little to no effort.

  1. Get Mobile-Friendly

Back in April 2015, Google revealed that their algorithms would start to use “mobile-friendly” as a ranking signal. Do you rank? Fifty-seven percent of users say they won’t recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile site (CMS Report). With more and more people using smartphones and tablets to visit websites, take the extra step to make sure your site is optimized for mobile devices.

  1. Clean Up Your SEO

If you haven’t done it recently, now is the time to think about cleaning up your SEO. By making a few quick and simple changes, you could significantly increase your ranking on various search engine results pages.

Start with adding new content, followed by filling out the alt text field for all images on your site. Don’t forget about meta descriptions – they’re important! Your meta descriptions should be relevant to your content and include keywords.

  1. Out with the Old

One of the most important aspects of spring cleaning your site is getting rid of the old and making room for the new. This can mean broken images, internal or external links and even dusting off some relevant content that was never published.

Now is also a great time to add new images to give your entire site a fresh look and feel. Consider changing all passwords, updating employee bios and deleting products or promos that are no longer relevant.

And always, always update your content. Content is king. It bears repeating!

The “R” word can often be intimidating, but sometimes redesigning your site is necessary. If your site appears dated, then a complete overhaul might be called for. After all, you should look different from the competition.
